Whilst the game of basketball continued to revolve around high-cut footwear designs in the past, Kobe Bryant took the world by storm by presenting the Nike Zoom Kobe IV in 2009. In today’s diversely talented league, low-top shoes are now worn by every type of player, from shifty point guards to rangy forwards and powerful big men.
Once again, he takes the swoosh to a whole new level with his fourth Nike signature shoe – Nike Zoom Kobe IV Protro. Breaking out of the high-ankle tradition, Bryant continues to prove that a light and low-cut profile could still give optimum support at the game’s highest level.
Bryant developed the idea of “Protro” , which stands for a balance between performance and retro. Its impact on the game was tremendous, as it linked the low-top movement with a single player.
“Protro is about evolution and improving on things that were,” says Bryant. “I wanted to build a business that wasn’t just based on things I have done in the past. It is important that the brand stands for performance and that everything we do is innovative, even if we are releasing shoes from the past they still must be built on performance.”
The new model still retains some of the primary features of the original silhouette: Its Flywire construction that used thin, strong nylon fibers to support the upper, as well as the LunarLite foam in the forefoot, a Zoom Air unit in the heel and a full-length Phylon midsole provided responsive cushioning.
The Nike Zoom Kobe IV Protro takes a ’96 draft day colorway, inspired by a Charlotte color scheme, and brings in some updated performance features, including an adjusted vamp shape, a sleeker heel shape, and wider outsole traction.
The Nike Zoom Kobe IV Protro is released in SNKRS North America, nike.com and at select global retailers.Leave a comment
