The Kardashians were a professional athlete’s jinx.
Kris Jenner started by turning Bruce Jenner into Caitlyn Jenner. Kim ended Reggie Bush and Kris Humphries’ careers just when it was going in the right direction. Khloe drove two-time NBA Champion Lamar Odom up the wall to the brink of admitting his cocaine addiction during the relationship, and now recently breaking up and with the Cavaliers’ Tristan Thompson.
Kendall followed in the footsteps of her family, first forcing D’Angelo Russell to be traded to Brooklyn, then rendering Chandler Parson’s NBA career to a slump, and finally ending Blake Griffin’s reign as a top-10 player in the league. She is now dating former ‘Rookie of the Year’ Ben Simmons. The world awaits with bated breath to see what may happen.
Every athlete the Kardashians has dated has had their sporting career affected in one-way or another, usually for the worse.
But none of them, however, can compare to Drake’s Curse. He doesn’t need to date them. All he needs is a photo.
The Canadian-born rapper in recent times has been afflicted with a dreaded plague; if he takes a photo with a player from a team – they lose. If he endorses himself as a fan of a club – they lose. If he poses in a photo in their jersey – they lose.
You can see where this is going.
The four-time Grammy Award winner has been an avid follower of sports, and sports has been an advocate for superstitions.
It all started back in 2012, when Drake was introduced to Johnny Manziel, an NFL prospect. Manziel came out of high school and was one of the brightest quarter-backs for that year. Manziel became the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy, Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Manning Award in 2012.
A budding friendship was formed between the two that culminated in Manziel getting released by the Cleveland Browns after being caught (on camera, of course) in Las Vegas partying with his newfound friend instead of with the team.
Manziel bounced between teams in the Canadian Football League before joining the Alliance of American Football.
Toronto Raptors employed Drake as their global ambassador and ever since then, has had an issue of making it to the final stages of the NBA playoffs. The basketball team has reached the postseason only 10 times in the 23 seasons since its foundation in 1995.
Despite being one of the favorites to come out of the Eastern Conference in consecutive years, the Raptors has struggled to make any impact in the post-season. The Raptors ends the regular seasons often with one of the best records but was still unable to push past their brackets.
Kentucky Wildcats were always the top few NCAA basketball teams in the nation. After winning the title in 2012 with players such as Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Drake gave the team engraved rings and dubbed himself as ‘Kentucky Dad’. Needless to say, they never won it again ever since despite getting to the finals the following year, losing to UConn.
Miami Heat just won the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs in 2013. Drake went to party with LeBron James and Dwayne Wade and the rest is history. The two teams met again in the 2014 NBA Finals, and the Spurs got their revenge on the Heat winning 4-1. King James then departed Miami to go back to Cleveland, officially ending their reign in the East.
Serena Williams and Drake claimed to be ‘just friends’ but were often pictured being intimate with each other. Then, things turned sour and they split in 2015, the year she had reached the US Open semi-finals and was a heavy favorite to win the title. Drake decided to show up in her semi-final match and she suffered a major upset as she lost to Roberta Vinci.
Drake was side-by-side with Conor McGregor at his weigh-in for his fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 236. Drake gave words of encouragement to McGregor with an Irish flag draped over his shoulders. The brash and loud-spoken Irishman then proceed to lose in one of the most lopsided matches of his career.
Various football teams have been handed defeats after a player took a photo with Drake.

Borussia Dortmund lost 5-0 to Bayern Munich after Jadon Sancho posted this image on his Instagram.
More recently, Sergio Aguero posted a selfie with Drake before their Champions League quarter final match against Spurs. He then missed a crucial penalty during the game and later conceded a goal for Spurs to go 1 up. Manchester City eventually crashed out of the Champions League on away goals even after winning the second leg 4-3.
Manchester United were also scheduled to play the Champions League quarter finals against Barcelona when Paul Pogba met Drake for the first time and its repercussions were felt immediately when United lost 1-0 at Old Trafford to the Spanish giants the next day.
Paris St-Germain full back Layvin Kurzawa posted a picture on his Instagram, preparing to lift the Ligue 1 trophy with the team in the next match. Instead, PSG proceeded to suffer their biggest loss against Lille, 5-1. They had not been beaten by such a margin since 2000, when they conceded five goals against Sedan.
