“This evening, we are in the presence of a true legend, an extraordinary athlete who has transformed golf and achieved new levels of dominance,”.
“He’s also a great person. He’s a great guy.”
United States President Donald Trump awarded Tiger Woods with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Monday, 6th May at the ceremony in Washington.
According to the White House, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is given to individuals who have made “especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.”
The medal is the nation’s highest civilian honor, and Trump described the 43-year-old as a “true legend” who transcended golf and then battled through countless injuries to return to pinnacle of the sport. Woods becomes the fourth golfer behind Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Charlie Sifford to receive the award.
He officially completes the first ultimate foursome for golf in the eyes of the United States presidents.
Woods’ win at Augusta last month was his fifth Masters title and ended an 11-year drought to finally claim his 15th major, just three shy of Jack Nicklaus’ record.
“Tiger was back on top,” Trump declared during the Rose Garden ceremony.
Trump lauded Woods “relentless will to win, win, win”. “These qualities embody the American spirit of pushing boundaries and defying limits,” the President added.
Other sporting legends that received these awards include Muhammad Ali, Michael Jordan, and Babe Ruth.Leave a comment
