According to ESPN, Manchester United are preparing a formal approach for Red Bull Salzburg’s Erling Haaland after seeing the 19-year-old’s performances during the first half of the season.
Haaland who worked with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Molde, became one of the hottest prospects in world football after a stunning start to the campaign. He has scored 26 goals in 18 games, including seven in four Champions League appearances making him the competition’s top scorer.
Sources have revealed that he is already rated at more than £85 million by Salzburg.
United will explore the possibility of signing Haaland in January and loaning him back to the Austrian side for the remainder of the season in an attempt to avoid a bidding war in the summer – especially when teams like Paris St Germain, Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona come hunting for him.
After losing Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Ander Herrera, Solskjaer will need to strengthen his midfield and offensive line.
Aside from Haaland, Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, Leicester midfielder James Maddison, Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, West Ham’s Declan Rice, Aston Villa pair John McGinn and Jack Grealish and Lyon forward Moussa Dembele are all under United’s radar.
Sancho has officially said he will be leaving the club in the summer, with Liverpool and United both keen on his services. However, Sancho has stated that he wants to play in the Champions League and that could prove a hurdle for United this season. Recent reports have emerged that PSG might also join the bidding war in the event Neymar decides to leave.
Leicester’s Maddison is also a hot commodity among English teams. United has already raided the former Premier League champions of Harry Maguire and will look to sign the versatile midfielder this January. Earlier in September, Maddison himself hinted that he is keen to make the switch to a team of the highest calibre. However, former Tottenham keeper Robinson said in an interview, “Leicester have got a real opportunity to finish above Manchester United in the table.”, and advised Maddison the snub any offers.
Wilson would add more offense to Solskjaer’s front line but could come at a hefty price after Chelsea failed to land the strikers signature in the summer, despite being willing to pay the Cherries 50m for him.
Just into his second season with Lyon, Moussa Dembele might not be making a move so soon. But if the price is right for the French outfit, they might let him go. Dembele scored 20 goals last season and has scored nine in 12 games this season. His price tag of 71 million may put off United.
