You’ve heard of trades in the the football industry, and in the NBA it is a common occurrence during the off-season.
But a trade in the world of mixed martial arts? This is history in the making.
UFC has officially agreed to release former flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson from his contract in order to allow him to sign with ONE Championship, and in return, ONE has agreed to release former welterweight champion Ben Askren from his contract in order to sign with UFC.
Demetrious Johnson was the UFC’s inaugural flyweight champion and broke Anderson Silva’s record for consecutive title defenses last year. Nicknamed the “Mighty Mouse”, Johnson saw a 13-bout winning streak come to an end in a defeat to Henry Cejudo at UFC 227.

Ben Askren on the other hand, is said to be one of the best fighters never to have stepped foot in the Octagon. “Funky” is unbeaten in 19 fights in the welterweight division in both Bellator MMA and ONE.

Askren has already started picking fights with some of the biggest names on the UFC roster. A dream match against Georges St. Pierre or a full-on grappling match with Khabib would be unreal.
